Mark Sanford and His Free Pass from Religion

Mark Sanford, recently elected Congressman from South Carolina, has hit the airwaves with a startling comeback. The former governor of the state, hid in shame after it was discovered the Republican left the nation with government "entertainment" money to have an affair.  He promptly bowed out of the public eye only to resurface this past year to run for office again. The question the nation was asking was whether the "family values" folks in the party would forgive such an openly public scandal.  The answer was a resounding, "yes".
What makes Mark's comeback interesting is his use of the concept of Christian forgiveness.  He refuses to discuss his recent shortcoming with the press quickly turning the topic to the danger of Obama, Pelosi, and their evil agenda.  His summary of the necessity of his election hinged on the fact that moral lapses are trumped by the urgency of defending the nation against the Democrats.
Mark  counted on what he surmised was Southern Baptist doctrines of salvation by grace and eternal forgiveness.  He did not mention the New Testament mandates on leaders first being found faithful.  Paul wrote that leadership was earned by steadfast and consistent moral conduct.  Novices were to be shunned.  Those who were proven faithful, were to fit the leadership qualifications. Stanford's ethical system would empty prisons if the prisoners said they found grace.  After all, who can judge, we are all sinners.
This election of Mark Sanford proves  "conservatives" will grant a pass to Mark, even though he has not earned it.  They are in affect saying the evil of the Obama administration justifies extreme measures.  It might also suggest that economic issues like taxation are more important to the Religious Right than moral values.....which is supposed to be what the movement  is about.
Newt Gingrich and Mark are blazing a new path that gives a new definition to"traditional values."

Display:
It is no wonder to me why there is no accountability in the GOP. White evangelical Christian voters essentially have no standards by which to hold their elected officials to account. Squirt a few tears, ask for forgiveness, say you love Jesus, and you can swindle the state out of money; lie to your wife and kids, staff, and the state's voters; take off to be with the "love of your life," and then still proclaim that you champion traditional family values. You are probably right that appealing to their base instincts regarding Democrats, especially Nancy Pelosi, won him the election. That is frightening. It suggests that they view Democrats as the embodiment of evil--something very incompatible with democracy.

There were rumors during President Obama's first campaign that some of the local "Good Christian" churches were saying that a vote for a Democrat was a vote for the devil.  In the elections previous to that, at least one car-load of "Good Christian" young people were caught going around destroying the signs for Democrats - and bragged that they'd destroyed hundreds of them (as if that was a good thing).  The rumors were they came from the local "Good Christian" "university", which meant that they would have had to cross into another county - miles from their "school", to do so.

Knowing what I know about that "school", I believe that they were being sent out by the administration, but in a way where the school could deny official responsibility.  That school used to teach their "ministry" students to infiltrate and take over other churches (or disrupt their ministry) - I used to hang out with the kids being so trained when I was a cult member.  I've heard from another walkaway (who attended the "ministry" part of that school) that they've expanded that into all sorts of other dirty tricks... like how to create problems for groups they don't like.  I need to ask that person if they got training in political bad tricks... how to violate their tax-free status and get away with it and so on.

In our county, throughout the last election I saw only two or three signs for Democrats (for President Obama), and at least one of those vanished by the next day.  (In the first election, only ONE that I remember and it was gone in short order.)  I've talked with people who had signs in their yard and they were destroyed one after another, until they got tired of putting them up.  The common story was that complaining to the police did no good (the sheriff had at least one separation of church and state lawsuit against him).  One elderly woman I visited with said that her sign was in a locked fenced-in area, and someone came late at night and replaced it with Republican signs.  She fussed about it, but again nothing was done (she lives along the road I travel a few times a week).

Yeah, they demonize us alright - and worse.  They've been doing so for at least a decade if not much longer.

James, to  hear some of them, being a Democrat is not compatable with the Christian faith. Besides the family values, Democrats represent government spending, which they deplore.

by wilkyjr on Wed May 08, 2013 at 02:00:11 PM EST

Actually, Republicans adore government spending -- as long as the money is flowing to them.  This is why wars are so popular with many of them (they provide jobs) and why they are so anxious to privatize the schools and other often "public" functions.  Money will still be spent -- and in some case, probably more than in by government employees -- but it will flow to their businesses.

I definitely agree with you regarding the baffling willingness to forgive (to the point of even swooning over the "sinner") on the part of some of those within the Religious Right.  It actually appears to be a form of "magical thinking" -- the bright and glowing flip-side to their demonization of the Democrats.

It doesn't say much for their common sense or even their faith, for that matter, to be so incredibly gullible!

by coralsea on Wed May 08, 2013 at 07:42:15 PM EST

don't mind the spending if it's on the military or on police.  The spending they hate is anything that helps the poor, because "God is obviously punishing the poor person because they're a sinner, and rich people must be good people because God is blessing them".

Plus they don't want the schools to teach the truth... like evolution is reality and observed, or that America was NOT founded as a Christian Nation.  They also don't want their students to learn just how cruel and evil the "Good Christians" have been throughout history (almost since Jesus' days), or that non-Christians can be good people and aren't all out to destroy Christianity.  That's why they want privatized schools, and separation of Church and State done away with - and their rabid hostility towards other religious traditions.

They'd especially would dislike information disproving a literally-true Bible being taught to their thought-controlled followers, and that information IS readily available.

It's all about control, and pouring money into their pockets is in a way secondary.

...if he really won? According to Brad Friedman at the brad blog (http://bradblog.com/)  there's no way to verify the results:  "While it's completely possible that PPP's pre-election numbers were entirely wrong, or that the disgraced Sanford legitimately, somehow, achieved an 18 point turnaround in just two weeks, the voters of SC will never know one way or another if he did or didn't. Once again, we have another 100% unverifiable faith-based election in the world's once-greatest democracy."
Aside from that, the hypocrisy of conservative Christians is breathtaking.

Jerry Falwel U. gave Newt a free pass after his affair.  The President of Baylor was freinds with Newt's crowd at the time while he was in hot after impeaching Bill Clinton for doing the same.
