Robert Jeffress Continues Legacy at First Baptist Dallas

Robert Jeffress, speaking at the recent  Values Voter Summit, voiced his endorsement of Rick Perry and stated that Christians were not to vote for Perry's rival because he is a Mormon.  Jeffress made national headlines by his surprising comments.  To those acquainted with Jeffress and his church, the comments were more expected than stunning.
Jeffress is pastor of the historic First Baptist Church in Dallas.  If you haven't checked, one of this congregation's members is the reason we have the 501c3 tax exemption IRS code.  One of its wealthy members was using fake tax shelters to hassle LBJ.  Just a few years ago one of the church's  members, happening to be a lawyer, wrote an article attacking 501c3 as an assault on freedom of speech.  He was quoted in the Southwestern Seminary alumni magazine which happened to have FBC Dallas connections through its president and board members.  The church newsletter once carried a front page picture of one GOP Presidential candidate.

Jeffress has hit the spotlight earlier with his views expressed about separation of church and state.  He tended to pile on First Amendment folks using David Barton as his source. The pastor made headlines while he was pastor at First Baptist Church in Wichita, Falls Texas.  Robert discovered he did not agree with one of the books in the city library about gays so he promptly checked it out and hid it so that no one could read it.

The pastor was left dangling out on a lonely limb whenever Perry refused to agree with Robert about his views on Mormons.  One of Robert's legacy pastors at the Dallas Church didn't chose theology as much as policy whenever he backed Gerald Ford over fellow Southern Baptist Jimmy Carter.  The pastor, W. A. Criswell, also was made famous by his sermon sent out to every church in Texas telling them not to vote for John Kennedy because he was a Catholic.    Another key church/state issue thus resides in the ancient hallways of the church.

Criswell had a history of hard right views on race and using his influence to attack integration.  He once delivered a speech to the South Carolina legislature over such.  Authors like Rice's Chandler Davidson not to mention the more recent Bryan Burrough's work link Criswell and the church to hard right politics in Texas.  The Council on National Policy, the John Birch Society and Religious Right organizations have links to the crowd at First Baptist.

The fact that the Constitution does not allow religious tests for office does not seem to bother Robert.  Criswell once called the idea of separation of church and state the creation of an infidel. One wonders if Perry's tax breaks and anti -federal regulation views carries more weight than the idea of Mormonism does to the crowd Robert Jeffress preaches to. Jeffress might have offended Perry and state GOP leadership.  He certainly made no enemies at Frist Baptist by his statement.

I wonder if Robert's family had to visit a surgeon for emergency surgery if he would give a religious test to the doctor?  His cross town rival at Prestonwood Baptist Church claims God's choice was Mike Huckabee. Criswell endorsed Gerald Ford from the front steps of the church.  If Robert and his friends get their way, the prohibition of using the pulpit for such things is a promising prospect.

Display:
I doubt that Perry could be offended, apart from his political calculation & blind ambition. His legacy is of course the friends he keeps/kept and the baggage the entire sorry crowd weighs down upon all things reasonable.

W.A. Criswell's long history at FBC/Dallas was filled with sensationalisms, whether cultivating the church affiliation of Billy Graham or rubbing elbows with Hulen Hunt's millions & billions.  He was always a renegade so far as the convention goes, both TBC & SBC. To be to the right of all such with charades galore surely destroyed all credibility to the outside, while making points within & counting the dollars he squeezed out of them.

Rogert Jeffrries is just staying in the Criswell mold & expectations. Not getting along with his fellow right-wing Baptists is practice for excommunicating Mormons, with gusto more or less made to order. All spirituality suffers from the denizens of religious malpractice that is the hallmark of Jeffress whose 'values' hardly mesh with the demands of Christianity. Ditto for the rest of the folks at the 'values summit' too.

Jeffress was interviewed on MSNBC.  He repeated and appeared to deny his statements.  He then claimed he would vote for Mormon Romney over President Obama.  This was because of "spiritual reasons."

The First Baptist Dallas website: www.firstdallas.org has links to Jeffress MSNBC interview and to his sermon endorsing Perry. It's a blatant violation of their tax status but my experience has been that the IRS does absolutely nothing when confronted by complaints about these kind of transgressions.

A bit of irony is found in the fact that both Criswell and Mormons held to white racial superiority views as doctrine. Both changed their dogma after public exposure and changed to accomodate modern culture.

They are following the path J. Frank Norris made as pastor of First Baptist.

You might enjoy the new book, The Shooting Salvationist, by David Stokes. It is about the "trial of the century" when Norris was brought before an Austin jury accused of capitol murder.  C. S. Lewis based his novel Elmer Gantry on the life of Norris.  Norris would endorse candidates from his pulpit....which was decades before we had 501c3.

I believe the Lewis who wrote "Elmer Gantry" was Sinclair, not C.S. The latter is better known for The Screwtape Letters, the Narnia tales, and the Perelandra trilogy.

I knew about Norris and had read about him in Darren Dochuk's "From Bible Belt to Sun Belt." Stokes's book was fantastic. Norris had an unusual ability to carry grudges for a lifetime, and he made a lot of enemies during his tenure as pastor of First Baptist.

I suspect that Sinclair Lewis used both Billy Sunday and J. Frank Norris as his role models, and Billy Sunday attacked "Elmer Gantry" when it was published in 1927. Aimee Semple McPherson was the model for Gantry's first flame, Sharon Falconer.

My mind thought Sinclair, my hand wrote C.S.
