More on the Gainesville "Preacher"

Well, it appears that he's painted himself into a corner, and will be going through with his Koran-burning even though everyone from the President down has tried to get him to stop.
My opinion of that group is going downhill all the time.  Their expression of hatred for the "Other" is in opposition to everything that I read as God's "Words" in the Bible, yet these jackasses keep insisting on offending others in God's name.  Sadly, this has been the history of a segment of Christianity for almost 2000 years, yet people still don't see how their words run counter of what they claim to follow.

The preacher has said that it's a black-and-white situation, and either he obeys God or the Devil (thus locking himself into an action that most real Christians find abhorrent).  Problem is... I would say that he's obeying EVIL by doing this.  Knowing the types of churches that spawn teachings like his, I am not that surprised, but it does grieve me.  I wish something would happen so that it doesn't occur (preferably not a bad "something")- and that "something" happens would be such that it appears to even them to be as a sign from God showing disfavor with this sort of thing.

At the same time, however, I can say that opposition to this so-called "Message" is growing all the time, and like I figured, this guy's immediate following isn't that great (reports say roughly 30 people).  Military leaders have expressed opposition to this "Koran-burning" and are saying that this will bring harm to the troops- and with the attitude shown by "churches" like this towards the military (I would call that attitude "Rah Rah WAR!!!"), I'm surprised that the guy is still saying he's going through with it.  There are protests being planned, today an interfaith prayer service is taking place, and I hope that the word gets around to the rest of the world that while these jackasses are being stupid, the rest of us have rejected them.

Maybe some good could come of this, even though it's a propaganda coup for the militant fundamentalist Islamic groups.  I'm hoping that groups like this will keep showing themselves to be so odious that ordinary Americans will start rejecting them- as well as the so-called "theology" (Dominionism) that spawns stuff like this.  Maybe the word will also get around the world that while there are groups like this in America (and sadly they're fairly common); there are a lot more people in this country who actually practice acceptance and kindness towards the Other, and who reject stuff like this.

Here's what I'm wondering:  If this guy has only about thirty followers, how did he ever manage to get so much mass media attention?  Why is anyone paying any attention to him at all?

I think it could be because he's doing what so many dominionists wish they could do, and because he's only slightly worse than the rest.  Plus, he's made a name for himself in the past.

I think that while his "church" might only have 30 members, at the same time he's probably supported by a great many other dominionist "churches"- after all, pictures of his group are on many of the entries about the Rifqa Bary situation.

Someone promised him a new car if he would not burn the Korans, and it looks like he's getting a car out of the deal.

ARRGH.  So, it looks like being a jackass is profitable.

Maybe I should threaten to burn some Korans (or maybe Bibles).  Maybe we could get a new car out of the deal.  We could use something with low miles and good gas mileage.

Nah... I have too much respect for most (moderate/liberal) Muslims and especially for Mohammad (based on what I've recently learned).  I also know that there are other REAL Christians out there too, although from our point of view they are rather exceptional (at least in this area).

Not to mention that burning books is WRONG!
