The dominionists are starting to show their true colors, and the backwards and provincial attitude of Polk County, Florida is becoming more obvious.
In a nutshell, there was a meeting about Lakeland, Florida's proclivity for government sponsored prayer, and they had to call the police- not because of the atheists who attended, but because of the "Christians".  One of the so-called "Christians" even said that the atheists had no right to speak (the same one they called the police about).  I might add that he is the one who put up the offensive sign calling atheists fools.

The mayor called the meeting short- and only allowed one atheist to speak.  He somehow thought he was reading their minds, because he said that their plan was to be "rude, disruptive and disrespectful".  Funny- but I don't see that.  I see people trying to gain a little respect for their persons, and being denied the same rights and respect that the so-called "Christians" in the area demand for themselves.  In fact, his not allowing other atheists to speak was in itself disrespectful, and seems rather an obvious attempt to stifle free speech and public participation in government.

When will these people grow a brain?  Don't they get it- that THEY are the problem and not the atheists?  I guess I shouldn't be surprised, after living in this county for decades- dominionism is so dominant in this area that if you leave your home, you run about a 50-50 chance of being proselytized or subjected to dominionist lies.  Since the general atmosphere is so strongly Christian Triumphalist (an attitude that I think Jesus would find offensive), government-sponsored religion should be expected.

Education is the key- but how do we get people to understand that separation of church and state protects them as well as those they don't like?

ArchaeoBob,
thanks for the keen observations in your writing. Education is the key; unfortunately, the Right has greatly succeeded in underfunding education, resulting in harried teachers and under performing students who don't have a clue about the Dominionist agenda.
I am a barber in Mississippi and I have customers who are retired university professors. One yesterday said that he is losing hope for the nation, that we are sliding into something that is not good. I am hearing that more and more from 'liberal' academics (although in reality they are not that liberal) but down here, anyone who deviates from the Fox Party line is vehemently denounced.

in academia also see what is coming down.  A couple have expressed fear- not just for the nation, but for anyone who isn't dominionist (including fear for their own selves).

The dominionists are well aware (and have been for some time) of the importance of education.  When I belonged to that sort of stuff, I heard regular derisive comments about higher education all the time- and literally decades after I'd walked away, I realized that I had been deliberately manipulated out of college and into dead-end jobs (grunt labor- and things like working as a night clerk at a convenience store).  Even in the mainstream church I attended (steeplejacked), I became less welcome once I'd returned to school- especially as I was learning about that "horrible lie" evolution (never mind that it is observed fact).  They fight at the individual as well as societal level to prevent people from learning the truth, in the fear that they'll "reject Christ" (read: reject the dominionists' attempts to control even their thoughts).  Funny about that last one- their preaching tends to drive me away from Jesus, but what I learn (which may be contrary to the Bible) actually increases my faith in Christ and God.

I've reported on some of the attitudes of the Florida politicians.  We're constantly fighting attempts to make getting a REAL education harder, although I must admit they've been winning.  After all, they control the purse strings, and it's hard to teach or do research when you don't have money.

That it also seems to be getting harder and harder to get "higher education" as well.  They've significantly tightened the purse strings for average people and made advanced degrees a bit harder to attain.  I suspect that the goal is getting to the point where only those who can pay out-of-pocket for their education are the ones who can go to college.

In fact, I once had an editor wannabe (in the school newspaper) actually say to me that if someone couldn't pay for their education out of pocket, they didn't belong in school anyway!!!  (He was, as I remember, planning on going into politics, and for all I know, may be in Tallahassee right now!)

When I mentioned that I'd returned to school because of my health, he wanted to know what I'd done to wreck my health.  Even after telling my story (I did NOT cause my health problems), he still insisted that he shouldn't have to pay taxes to put "poor people who need to just get a job" through school!

That sort of attitude is almost ubiquitous in this area- at least around the dominionist churches- which you can find everywhere.
