Veteran judge throws a defense attorney in jail for refusing to recite the pledge of allegiance.
From Alternet: "According to the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, Chancellor Talmadge Littlejohn, a veteran jurist who recently celebrated his 50th year in the state bar, urged 49 year-old defense attorney Danny Lampley to recite the pledge of allegiance, something the lawyer has refused to do on principle. Lampley reportedly "rose and was respectful," but remained mum. Littlejohn found him in contempt of court and ordered him jailed. Lampley spent 5 hours in prison before being released, and was back in Littlejohn's court later in the afternoon." (Link to story at bottom)

The truth is that most everyone down here in Mississippi (and I suspect in other places) agree 100% with the Judge's actions. Any deviation from lockstep patriotism in a Tupelo court is now, apparently, a crime. And if it is a crime in court, then perhaps someday it will be a crime out of court?

At the same time, a privatized fire department in Tennessee allowed a person's home to burn down because they didn't pay an up-front subscription.  They stood and watched with their equipment left on the truck, while the homeowner begged and pleaded and offered money.  The house burned to the ground.

Let's see... we have a South Carolina county refusing jail inmates from having ANYTHING but a Bible (paperback, who knows which version?), we have a county that demands subscriptions for fire protection and if you don't pay (or don't have it), you're out of luck, and we have a Mississippi judge throwing a lawyer into jail for not reciting the pledge of allegiance (he DID stand and was respectful).  What does this have to do with dominionism?

If you listen to dominionist rhetoric, this sort of stuff is central to their thinking- worship of the US (and refusal to recognize just how evil a country it's been), reduced government- except to force people to worship and behave the way THEY want, even if it means that people suffer... and limiting people's access to information except their propaganda and religious indoctrination.

It's all part of the package... and the economics, politics, and religious ideology is so intertwined that you cannot separate them- although most of it is driven by their ideology.

Tupelo lawyer Danny Lampley says he is amazed by the publicity he's had since being thrown in jail for nearly five hours by a judge for refusing to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in court.

Lampley's decision on Oct. 6 and the response of Chancery Judge Talmadge Littlejohn to jail Lampley for contempt have been debated across the country.

"I'm still surprised," Lampley said last week. "It has made a mess of my practice ... I work from my home. I had to unplug my phone."

Soon after the incident, Lampley said phone calls would start at 6:30 a.m., and he continually would receive calls until after 10 p.m.

It's slowing down now, but he's still receiving calls - many of them opposed to his actions.

Jim Waide, another Tupelo lawyer, described Lampley as "a very quiet person and a nonconformist."

Waide said Littlejohn has a good reputation as a judge, but he doesn't know why the judge would think he could do what he did.

Littlejohn is known for asking everyone to stand to recite the pledge when he enters his courtroom. Lampley is known for fighting free-speech legal battles.

A long-ago ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court said schoolchildren could not be forced to recite the pledge.

Lampley, 49, previously refused to say the pledge in front of Littlejohn in June.

He was asked to leave the courtroom but returned after the pledge.

Lampley was representing a client in a divorce case when he was found in contempt.

Littlejohn's order said Lampley could purge himself of criminal contempt by complying with the order to stand and recite the pledge.

Lampley agreed to stand for the pledge but said he shouldn't have to recite it unless he wanted to.

Lampley wouldn't say whether he and Littlejohn have communicated since the incident. But he said the judge has been quiet about it.
