The Nove/Dec issue of Mother Jones ("Attack on the Middle Class," with a cartoon of a 50-foot Sarah Palin featured on the cover) has another installment of what will likely be Jeff Sharlet's next book on The Family - seemingly an endless vein of rich ore! ("Junkets for Jesus." )
Some Highlights:
A rundown on former Congressman Mark Siljander (R-MI). In particular a PowerPoint presentation by a Family-affiliated group called the International Peace Organization, which purports to bring Muslims to a "personal relationship with God through Jesus." In his book, A Deadly Misunderstanding, writes Sharlet, Siljander suggests that "Muslims... can keep their religious affiliation so long as they bow before Jesus." Sharlet notes that "not unlike Jews For Jesus," these Messianic Muslims "will be able to pass as Muslim Muslims." Sharlet notes the influence of The Family's Doug Coe in encouraging Siljander to overcome the Muslim-Christian divide. A "quest" that led to efforts by Siljander, who became a lobbyist after leaving office, to try and get the Islamic American Relief Agency (IARA) removed from the US government's list of designated organizations supporting terrorism, with funds "funneled... through the family."
The article also affords a a close-up look at Tom Coburn; and, specifically, a secretive mission to Lebanon three years after the 2006 Israeli brutal bombing of the southern part of that country. ("Secretive" because of explicit denials by Tim Coe and Sen. Coburn.)
