Fundies raising stink about prospective gay appointment
Because of that, the religious right is apparently scared to death that Berry might--oh, the humanity!--curb discrimination in federal hiring practices. The story quotes Peter LaBarbera, head of a group called "Americans for Truth About Homosexuality", as spouting the usual whine line about any attempt to let gays have the same rights we have. "First of all, looking at Mr. Berry's track record, it's obvious that he's a homosexual activist within the federal government, doing a lot of things within a Republican administration that most people never were aware of," he contends. "So, what we have is sort of a subversive -- if you could call it that -- homosexual activist, and now he's going to have an even much more visible and powerful role at OPM, which is a very powerful job in Washington. And it just shows what's going to happen under the Obama administration." Although President Obama has been an outspoken champion of civil unions and domestic-partner benefits for government employees, LaBarbera contends many people remain unaware of how radical his campaign promises were to homosexual activists. As many of you know, I've heard some of this even before becoming a charismatic Christian. I find myself asking the same question I've always asked--what's so "radical" about gays being hired to government jobs? It's not a "special" right. Don't be surprised to hear more hand-wringing about this from fundie circles in coming days.
