More Biblical Precedent for Allowing Abortion

This is a follow up to my most recent diary entry.
The notion that abortion prior to "quickening" is murder does not have Biblical precedent. To the contrary, the Bible recommends administering an abortifacient to a wife if her husband suspects her of being unfaithful. Numbers 5:11-29. A priest would administer the abortifacient ("water of bitterness", Num. 5-17-18) and if the woman has in fact been unfaithful, the water would "make your uterus drop, your womb discharge". Num. 5-21,22, and 27.  The "medical expertise" of Christians is something I have blogged about elsewhere.

A distinction between punishments for accidently inducing an abortion (paying a fine) and killing a human being (being put to death) was reflected in the earliest known legal codes, including the Code of Hammurabi. Similarly, the law of Moses could distinguish between aborting a fetus and injuring a human being:

21:22 If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. 21:23 And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, 21:24 Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 21:25 Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. Exodus 21:22-25.

Of course, the God of Israel was not a "pro-Life" god: God could sometimes demand the death of innocent children and even the unborn. God called for the death of his own son, and by crucifixion! God's judgment of the people of Samaria was that they will "fall by the sword, their little ones will be dashed to the ground, their pregnant women ripped open". Hosea 13:15-16. Dozens of similar passages can be quoted; the Holy Scriptures were not written to provide a simple and consistent set of arguments.

Does God call for the death of his own son in the New Testament? In most evangelical and conservative Catholic theology he does so, but should we confuse these theologies for the what the Bible actually says?

The New Testament does not show God calling for the death of his son, and of course, the theology of the trinity - nascent, but not explicit in the New Testament - means that Jesus should not be understood as God's Son in way that is completely separate from Himself. God is also offering his own death, rather than kill to bring about reconciliation between God and humanity, and between people.

Most Christians accept without challenge the non-Biblical notion that Jesus was the literal "son" of God.  The legends surrounding the birth of Jesus, filtered through the lens of Greek and Roman pagan theology, have contributed to this misunderstanding.

It was not exceptional for a Jew to call himself a son of God.  In this one does not mean that God is the literal genetic/birth father of an individual, but rather that God is the father of us all.  We are all children of God.

The misconception about Jesus' parentage is understandable, given how little most Americans (and other Western Christians) know about their own religion and about other religions that have co-existed with Christianity since its inception late in the First Century CE.

One only has to study the myths of the Greeks and Romans about their chief god Zeus/Jupiter to find some of the source of the misunderstanding about the divine parentage of Jesus.  Zeus/Jupiter was a notorious lech who impregnated many women and fathered many half-human/half-god children.  Heracles/Hercules was but one example.  It is also worth noting here that Heracles/Hercules was the focus of some of the "mystery cults" that were common around the Mediterranian, and which is considered by some to have been the basis of the Christian cult that was basically a Hebrew/Jewish form of the same mysteries, celebrated by the Gnostic Christians.

The truth is also revealed in Jesus' Sermon on the Mount where he instructs his followers in what we know today as the "Lord's Prayer".  Jesus said "Our father who art in heaven..." nor "My father who art in heaven..."

Ask most Christians to tell you about their beliefs and most will give you a string of statements that are more about "folk religion" than anything found in the Bible.

A study of the "Old Testament" clearly shows that Jehova/Yahweh has no problem shedding the blood of innocents, and in fact there are many examples of where this deity is "pleased" by the indiscriminate slaughter of men, women and children - including the unborn.

To Yahweh/Jehova, life seems pretty cheap.  There is no Biblical basis whatsoever for the "pro-life" crowd's viewpoint.  Of course, the writers of the "Old Testament" did not have the medical tools and advances in science that we utilize today.  For example, most in the ancient world did not realize that both men and women contribute genetic material to an embryo, nor did most women know they were pregnant in the first couple of months after conception.  There were no pregnancy tests available in Caanan!

If more people made a greater effort to actually study the book they claim is the "word of God", then perhaps it would not be so easy for the charlatans of the religious right to mislead their followers.  Perhaps if more study of the actual teachings of Jesus were emphasized, the power and influence of the most radical players in the movement would be decreased and their "un-Biblical" assertions challenged.

Knowledge is power; ignornace is weakness.  How can anyone claim to hold religious beliefs if they are not familiar with the source of those beliefs?  Greater biblical literacy would make the job of the faith-based hatemongers much harder, and would in fact expose them to be the power-hungry political players that they really are.
