Florida Christian License Plate

Well, Florida is at it again.

They're considering a "Christian" license plate.  It's supposed to have a cross and a stained glass window on it with the words "I Believe!" More below the break!

Quote from the article (Bay News 9 http://www.baynews9.com/content/36/2008/4/24/342498.html)  "Bullard, the plate's sponsor, isn't sure all groups should be able to express their preference. If atheists came up with an "I Don't Believe" plate, for example, he would probably oppose it."

Note that Bullard is REPRESENTATIVE Edward Bullard.  This is about another member of the legislature (from the same article):
"Some lawmakers say the state should be careful. Rep. Kelly Skidmore said she is a Roman Catholic and goes to Mass on Sundays, but she believes the "I Believe" plate is inappropriate for the government to produce.
"It's not a road I want to go down. I don't want to see the Star of David next. I don't want to see a Torah next. None of that stuff is appropriate to me," said Skidmore, a Democrat who voted against the plate in committee. "I just believe that.""

I find that rather offensive as well- "it's not appropriate for me"... what about the people that it WOULD be appropriate for???  If you're going to support one faith- shouldn't you support them ALL???   Why did she point out JEWISH symbols as something not welcome???  I wonder what she'd think of the symbols of MY religion- which was on this continent for many generations before the Roman Catholic church showed up!  (It's also- according to elders and spiritual leaders- a pre-Columbian form of Christianity!)

The money raised through the sales of this plate would go to supporting "faith-based school activities".  I am curious as exactly to what type- maybe a nice fundamentalist anti-LGBT group?  Some organization like Campus Crusade for Christ?  Or one of the descendents of Maranatha Ministries?  Maybe the youth version of "Watchmen on the Walls?"

Kool-Aid anyone?

Anyway...

In the last few years, they've tried several times to have a license plate like this- one with Jesus on it, another with "Trust God".  The state has a "Choose Life" anti-abortion license plate already- with the money raised going to organizations that oppose abortion.  (The courts have ruled that to be legal.)

Let's see- we have two bills in the Florida Legislature that would solicit funds for Dobson's Focus on the Family.  We have an attempt to allow direct funding of religious organizations BY the state (the constitution has to be changed.)  We have this attempt to have state-sponsored religion.

We have Rhonda Storm's attempt to force religion into the science classroom (at the same time, the legislature is trying to toughen the standards to create a "world-class educational system" http://www.theledger.com/article/20080417/NEWS/804170495/1003/NEW S01).

They're trying to cut money going to the regular schools, and increase the amount going to vouchers (http://www.theledger.com/article/20080418/NEWS/804180475/1003/NEW S01)- one of the dominionists goals.

The state is cutting social support programs left and right- and cutting taxes for the rich (with little impact on ordinary people!)  They're trying to defund higher education- especially the social sciences.   They're trying to eliminate important social sciences programs (at USF- they tried to eliminate African Studies, Women's Studies, and ISLAC (the Institute for the Study of Latin America and the Caribbean.)  One of the top Legislators said that what is offered at universities should be "MARKET DRIVEN" and he made snide remarks about the number of psychology graduates. (NOTE: We had a protest march where at least 150 students took part- against this move).  Need I mention that this falls right into dominionist thinking!  They've been pretty much shown to be racist and sexist and opposed to any of the social sciences that aren't "Bible Based!"

Oh, yes- they also are fighting to cut wages and benefits for the lowest paid people in the University (the Graduate Assistants and other low-level employees) while giving big raises to the top people.  Some of the top-level perks would pay for most of the GA salaries! (e.g. $90,000 so the spouse of the university president can travel with him/her when going out of state).  Sound familiar?  I know it reminds me of what a conservative (and dominionist leaning) pundit told me one time- "if people can't pay for their education, they don't belong there!"

Anyone saying that the dominionists are loosing ground (or as a movement is dying) need to take a look at this state.  If we don't stop them, they will WIN.

And citizens can kiss their freedom goodbye!!!

Display:
The license plate is in trouble- as of Friday afternoon, it was removed from the list.  Rhonda Storms is trying to keep it alive, but expressed (shown on TV news) little hope for it getting through, although there was a little hope mentioned that it might be added back into the bill later.

Good.  I'm tired of having THEIR version of Christianity shoved in my face all the time.  Why don' t they try living it instead of marketing it???

Have they not heard of bumper stickers? I know Florida plates are cheap, but stickers are cheaper and don't anger people so much....

Thanks, ArchaoBob, for the update.

The plate has been removed from the list.  The way the news article is worded makes it sound like it's somewhat bad news (IMO)- commenting on all of the specialty plates in Florida (which makes it sound like it should have been considered just another plate).

Maybe I should check to see if there is an "Evolution is the TRUTH" plate in the list- I'd LIKE that!  (GRIN!)
