Florida Christian License Plate
Quote from the article (Bay News 9 http://www.baynews9.com/content/36/2008/4/24/342498.html) "Bullard, the plate's sponsor, isn't sure all groups should be able to express their preference. If atheists came up with an "I Don't Believe" plate, for example, he would probably oppose it."
Note that Bullard is REPRESENTATIVE Edward Bullard. This is about another member of the legislature (from the same article): The money raised through the sales of this plate would go to supporting "faith-based school activities". I am curious as exactly to what type- maybe a nice fundamentalist anti-LGBT group? Some organization like Campus Crusade for Christ? Or one of the descendents of Maranatha Ministries? Maybe the youth version of "Watchmen on the Walls?" Kool-Aid anyone? Anyway... In the last few years, they've tried several times to have a license plate like this- one with Jesus on it, another with "Trust God". The state has a "Choose Life" anti-abortion license plate already- with the money raised going to organizations that oppose abortion. (The courts have ruled that to be legal.) Let's see- we have two bills in the Florida Legislature that would solicit funds for Dobson's Focus on the Family. We have an attempt to allow direct funding of religious organizations BY the state (the constitution has to be changed.) We have this attempt to have state-sponsored religion. We have Rhonda Storm's attempt to force religion into the science classroom (at the same time, the legislature is trying to toughen the standards to create a "world-class educational system" http://www.theledger.com/article/20080417/NEWS/804170495/1003/NEW S01). They're trying to cut money going to the regular schools, and increase the amount going to vouchers (http://www.theledger.com/article/20080418/NEWS/804180475/1003/NEW S01)- one of the dominionists goals. The state is cutting social support programs left and right- and cutting taxes for the rich (with little impact on ordinary people!) They're trying to defund higher education- especially the social sciences. They're trying to eliminate important social sciences programs (at USF- they tried to eliminate African Studies, Women's Studies, and ISLAC (the Institute for the Study of Latin America and the Caribbean.) One of the top Legislators said that what is offered at universities should be "MARKET DRIVEN" and he made snide remarks about the number of psychology graduates. (NOTE: We had a protest march where at least 150 students took part- against this move). Need I mention that this falls right into dominionist thinking! They've been pretty much shown to be racist and sexist and opposed to any of the social sciences that aren't "Bible Based!" Oh, yes- they also are fighting to cut wages and benefits for the lowest paid people in the University (the Graduate Assistants and other low-level employees) while giving big raises to the top people. Some of the top-level perks would pay for most of the GA salaries! (e.g. $90,000 so the spouse of the university president can travel with him/her when going out of state). Sound familiar? I know it reminds me of what a conservative (and dominionist leaning) pundit told me one time- "if people can't pay for their education, they don't belong there!" Anyone saying that the dominionists are loosing ground (or as a movement is dying) need to take a look at this state. If we don't stop them, they will WIN.
And citizens can kiss their freedom goodbye!!!
