Here is another perfect example of why televangelists have such a bad image in this country.
Complaint filed with IRS after Tampa televangelist compares Romney to Satan

WASHINGTON _ Florida evangelist Bill Keller says he was making a spiritual -- not political -- statement when he warned the 2.4 million subscribers to his Internet prayer ministry that ``if you vote for Mitt Romney, you are voting for Satan!''

Full story

I'm sorry but according to the Bible, I thought that it was God's job to judge, not ours.  Did I read that part wrong?

Talk like this is disturbing on many levels.  First it is completely untrue.  Second it is a personal attack against Romney who, from what I have seen (which is admittedly not enough), is a decent person.  Third this kind of talk gives members of this evangelist's church (and those who watch him online) the impression that this is proper behavior, behavior that Christ would condone, and that couldn't be farther from the truth.  It is this kind of attitude that gives televangelists and Christians in general, such a bad name.  This is not what Christ taught us to do, is it?

The university I attend is in Tampa.  I'm not surprised at all by this behavior, based upon the jackleg preachers that come to our campus (many from the local fundamentalist churches).  I think (but may be wrong) that either Keller or some of his followers have been on campus- and preached hatred.  The "preachers" consider anything more liberal or Democrat to be of the Devil!  (They also think of any church NOT theirs to be of the "antiChrist".)

I'm told that the fundamentalist churches in Tampa "encourage" their followers who go after a degree to get one in business or engineering, because among other things they are far less likely to encounter any teaching about evolution, or that contradicts their "idea" of the Bible.

They don't even want their members befriending or associating with more liberal people.  After all, freedom and critical thinking is contagious!!!

majors make more money, which they are required by their church to tithe. Another reason to encourage those majors?

That is a valid hypothesis, and some of my observances fit it.

However,  I was told a couple of years ago by a fundamentalist classmate that their preachers encouraged people to go into business or engineering (education is another choice) because it would reduce their exposure to evolution and "immoral teaching".  They were concerned that "higher education" would destroy the students "faith".

The hostility towards people who don't toe the fundamentalist line is also rather strong.  I've seen several incidences of "Christian vandalism" on campus- as recently as yesterday!  One of my professors put up a news article dealing with fake archaeology (regarding Noah and his ark) and it was ripped down twice- and in the last few days someone wrote on it "Get Saved!"  The professors have to spend a significant amount of time dealing with fundamentalist hostility (towards evolution, but also towards other subjects).  In the introductory anthropology courses I took, on average one class period per course was spent on evolution and dealing with the fundamentalist hostility.  I remember hearing harsh words coming from fundamentalists and seeing numerous people walking out in a huff because evolution was being discussed.  I've also heard and read some really insulting things- for instance one person was very upset because a professor (friend of mine) wouldn't discuss his religious views in public nor would he allow her to preach her version of the subject in his class!

It is distressing to see such willful and blind ignorance!!

So, based upon what I've seen on campus (and experienced in this area), what Bill Keller did was pretty tame, and not surprising.  If you come to campus on most Wednesdays, I can pretty much guarantee you'll hear far worse from the local jackleg preachers!!!

that fundamentalism considers Mormonism a cult.

Even the 700 Club, whose Spirutal Life page on their web site, lists Mormonism as a cult.

So calling him Satan is a loose use of terminology, but it's intended to mean that his words can't be trusted, and his message is false. And since they consider themselves the bearers, and ONLY bearers of truth, than that justifes their behavior in warning their own that this cult member is precisely that.

Makes you wonder then why Pat Robertson had Romney speak at the commencement of the class of 2007 at Regent University.

Christianity sold it's spiritual hertiage back in the Eighties for thirty pieces of political silver they are spending now.

They are no different now than they were then, except they have a bit more political clout.

The goals are the same, the methods similar, and the damage they do to human souls is just as devastating.

If anything, they've finally succeeded in infecting other denominations (which was one of their big goals even back then- and long before!)
