The assertion that we are 'exceptional' in matters of faith is commonly buttressed by various polls citing church attendance.  Some years ago this rang false for me, so I devised an easy test: How many church seats are available in American communities?  (this has obvious advantages over opinion polls).  In my own rural upstate NY town and county, I discovered that. the maximum capacity ran around 9%. 
I posted this on some rationalist sites and had a few volunteers arount the country more or less corroborate my finding.  
     Responsible corroboration of this finding might do a lot to undercut the notion of the American Faith Juggernaut.

      I have a social science background and would be willing to put this together (or share my prelimnary work with anyone who wants to take it over). It's not a very expensive project, and one that might well shed light on public discourse.

Studies have compared the self-reported attendance figures with actual census figures taken in churches. In general self-reported figures are about twice the counts of attendees. This is roughly 20% vs 40%.

In addition surveys of people's religious beliefs are somewhat suspect due to several well-known effects when people answers such surveys.

The most common bias is for people to avoid picking an answer which they feel may be disapproved of. This leads to under reporting of attitudes about such things as atheism and homosexuality.

The way the questions are asked can also influence the results. The order of questions as well as whether they are stated in the positive or negative all have an effect. The deliberate biasing of questioning is frequently used in political polls to generate statistics that can then be used by the candidates.

If this weren't so there wouldn't be people identified as Democratic or Republican pollsters.

there's an interesting piece of research at the hartford Seminary site indicating that the more deovout you are the more likely you are to lie about church attendance.
     Anyway, I'm seriously interested in rounding out this project, if I can get a little help. I suspect it would be rather newsworthy in a salutory way.

While this is interesting, it is not really on topic for this site. The site topic is the religious right and what to do about it, not religion in general or the sociology of religion.
