Take a Few Minutes to Help Fight Historical Revisionism

Hi everybody.  I'm posting this diary because I need a bit of help with something.
Here's the situation.  Over the summer, I began writing customer reviews of revisionist history books sold on Amazon.com.  My goal in writing these reviews is to make homeschooling parents, most of whom are unaware of the lies and inaccuracies in these books, think twice before buying them to educate their children.  My reviews, however, are not going to do any good unless potential customers see them.  At first, this was no problem.  A few diaries from Bruce Wilson on the Daily KOS, letting people know that I had written these reviews and asking people to go vote for them, easily got them into the top three reviews that appear on the book's product detail page.

One of the books I reviewed, of course, was David Barton's "Original Intent."  When I originally posted this review, it quickly got about 400 positive votes, securing it's place as the "Most Helpful" review.  This review, however, mysteriously disappeared about a week later.  Amazon couldn't explain it's removal, said it did not violate any guidelines, and quickly restored it, but without the 400 votes it had gotten.  This was taken care of by 200 Daily KOS readers who went and voted again, getting the review back into the top three, where it remained until the middle of October.  Then, it was suddenly, and for no reason, moved out of the top three and bumped down to number five, where nobody will see it.  Amazon cannot explain why this was done, and after nearly a month of ridiculous correspondence with their customer service department, I've given up on dealing with them, and decided to make good on the threat I made in my last email to them that I would start posting about this on blogs if they don't correct the situation.  This diary is the start of making good on that threat.

So, what I'm asking people to do is to go to Amazon and vote for my review, and, for those who feel so inclined, post a comment to it questioning why it was moved. You need to sign in on Amazon to vote, but if you don't already have an Amazon account, it only takes a minute to register, and the only info you have to give them is an email address. Here's the link (my review is currently the fifth one in the list, titled "Revisionism: A Willing Accomplice").  Please do not vote for any of the four reviews above mine, as this would defeat the purpose.

If you've read Barton's book, you can do even more by writing your own review.  More one-star reviews will drive the book's rating down, and might make more homeschool parents take the time to read the reviews rather than just blindly choosing this book.

My eventual goal is to review every damn revisionist history book on Amazon, and I will periodically be posting here asking people to vote for these reviews.  Barton and his ilk have their minions out there promoting their dribble.  Our side needs our own minions to start more aggressively fighting the lies, and I'm hoping to be able to summon up those minions here.

Thanks,

Chris

It is ironic that the far right has been trying to remove historical revision from the public schools for years, with the help of Barton and his kind. They have had success in many areas. According to an article I recently read, under No Child Left Behind federal money cannot be used to train public school history teachers to teach anything other than traditional history - the approach fundamentalists claim is just the facts. "Facts" can be very selectively presented. Whether it is reasonable or not (I think it is not), historians have largely ignored this debate. Perhaps the importance of Barton's books for the home school sort raises more questions about the entrance of home schooled students into public colleges and universities. Nothing will change the minds of fundamentalist parents who home school. Those who accept Barton's fictional version of the past do so out of ignorance. However, Barton is a writer of fiction and not a historical revisionist. Barton is not a historian. I place myself on the "side" of revisionists. There are some excellent, worthwhile, and very scholarly examples of historical revision available from Amazon, but reading all of them would be impossible. I do plan to buy some as holiday gifts for some right wingers on my gift list.

I'm not sure why you're concerned if you think no one's going to read past the fifth comment. The first 4 pages are solidly anti-revisionist. The defenses of the book are buried deep - the last 4 pages.

if you go to the link I posted here.  If you just go to the regular page for the book, you then have to go to the list of all reviews, and then have to go to another link to sort them by most helpful before you get to the list that I linked to.

It's also not just a matter of the reviews above mine also being negative reviews. The problem is that these reviews don't contain much substance or a rebuttal of anything specific in Barton's book.  For example, all the second review on the book's main page says is:

Pure revisionist claptrap
"The founding fathers are rolling in their graves in response to this right wing kook driven fairy tale."

Reviews like this, while negative, make the claims in the reviews from Barton's fans that nobody on our side can point out any specific examples of lies seem to be correct. My review does give detailed examples of specific lies, but nobody is likely to see that.

According to the numbers, my review should automatically be in the number two spot, where it was until about a month ago.  Not only does it have the second highest number of favorable votes, but my reviewer rating, which is also factored in, is higher than the authors of the two reviews that were moved ahead of mine.  This means that somebody manually moved my review.  None of the many Amazon.com customer service people that I corresponded with about this could figure out why it was moved from its position, and I was promised repeatedly that they would try to find out why it happened.

The reason I'm trying to get more people to vote on it now, even though it already has the second highest number of votes and should be in the second position, is that one of the customer service people told me that when there is new voting activity, the reviews are automatically resorted.  I'm hoping that this might override anything someone might have done manually and get it back to where it should be.

My review has moved up into the number 3 position.  It should be number 2, but at least it's now back on the product detail page where it will be seen, making it clear that the Barton fans who say in their reviews that nobody can point out any specific lies are wrong.

Thank you to those of you who went and voted.

yes, it is 11 days since Chris reported that his review had moved up to #3. Better late than never, I was perusing Talk2Action more than usual tonight and found this article and voted for the review.  What I find curious is that the review has more helpful reviews than any others but is only at #3.  Good luck in your review writing Chris and now that I know what you're doing, I'll keep an eye out for them.

Exploration is an enormous piece of our prosperity it's the bedrock of all that we do with our customers. We don't guess what's wrong with a web business. We discover. This is the work of our exploration division. The vital inquiry to address is 'The reason why aren't visitors converting? and we investigate every possibility in discovering the appropriate response. And up to now i am trying to look for the answer and luckily i bump in here. Thanks for the person who mentioned this site to me. I am hoping to have word to your thoughts. It is important to take a few minutes out of our day to help fight historical revisionism. It is vital that we are aware of the truth and the full story of events,  Bicoastal Life And Business Sourabh Sharma so we can make informed decisions about our world and the people in it. Historical revisionism seeks to reinterpret, deny, or distort events in history to fit an agenda, and that should not be allowed to stand. Taking just a few minutes out of your day to learn more can help protect the truth and make sure that our stories are not rewritten.
