Fundamentalist Preacher may be charged

Yesterday, on the USF campus, a fundamentalist preacher was involved in a bit of a fracas.  It appears that he lunged at a young woman with a clenched fist, and then stuck his finger in her face.  She called the cops, and the "evangelist" (and his team) left.  The jackleg preacher involved may face charges for his actions.

These people regularly insult and offend students.  I've been there when they were using "canned-air" horns that could be heard in the classrooms and offices in the nearby buildings.  (In that incident, one of them blasted me right in the ear as I walked by.  I had to go to the clinic and the side of my head was numb for hours.)

They have repeatedly called the young women on campus "whores" and "sluts", and get really irate when they see Muslims and LGBT people.  Their language should be classified as hate speech- they tell people they are damned to hell all the time.

One day I even got one of them so angry that he was screaming- loud enough to be heard past a building and over 150 yards away.  He'd been carrying a sign saying "Let me tell you why you deserve to go to HELL!!!" which I found absolutely offensive.

They disrupt education, I've regularly dealt with students who were driven away from Christ because of their antics, and they dishonor the faith they claim to represent.  I hope that the school bans them (but doesn't do a blanket ban on Christian groups because of them!  There ARE some decent (non-dominionist) Christian groups on campus!)

I also hope that the young woman goes through with her charges.  These people are almost as bad as Phelps.

ArchaeoBob is a good friend of mine and I am the one who initially called him to tell what happened.

This has been an ongoing problem for years. Recently, the group has gotten even more agressive. They all seem to be the same group of hard looking middle age men. They look like thugs and quite frankly act like them as well.
Sadly, I'm now starting to hear some students quoting Harris, Hitchens, and Dawkins using the jackleg preachers as an example of why religion is bad.

(Friend/Hello!)

They belong to a group that is anti-LGBT, rather along the lines of Phelps' bunch (info provided by another friend).

Rather scary, if you ask me.

Recently I had the experience of having a student attack evolution (and promote creationism/"intelligent design" in class)- and then claim later that we'd "attacked" him, when we'd been defending science and only pointing out the errors in what he'd been saying (as well as politely disagreeing with him).

I think that they're reading from the same playbook- self-defense (or resisting) is called "attacking", while what they are doing is called something like "sharing" or "discussing" (or "witnessing").

Maybe they redefine hate speech as "sharing the Gospel".

I just wish they could see (and recognize) the damage they've been doing.

A horrible thought that just struck me- they just MAY see and recognize the damage- and either think it's good or just not care.

Ban the f*cks for rowdiness.

It's not their campus, they neither live there nor take classes there. No slack for them.

Tell them that if they want to exercise their First Amendment privileges, they have to abide by rules and regs, #1 of which is STFU (no amplification devices).

That is what a lot of people, including the PD want.  The problem is, they're just waiting for something like that to happen, and then they will sue the school for violation of free speech (this is what the police themselves have said).

We think that the schools are afraid of that.

There would be a firestorm if these twits were banned- unless it was handled exactly right.  That would require that somehow the word would get out how they're REALLY acting and that the stereotypes held in the churches about universities/university students were wrong.  Otherwise, the local dominionist churches would be in an uproar because we were persecuting "Christians".

Considering the dominionist mindset, it would probably happen anyway.

While we would all agree that the USA neither is, nor was, nor has ever been a 'Christian nation', it is true to say that the Christian religion - if not always true Christian faith - has thrived here as much as anywhere else in history.  At times this has been a real blessing, such as the Quaker-led anti-slavery movement, MLK Jr and civil rights, religious freedom, among others.

However, I believe that right-wing Christianity is leading to the downfall of Christianity in the USA. The beautiful message of grace in Jesus Christ and love for even our enemies has been trampled on, and the face of 'Christianity' that is now seen by most Americans is one of hatred, judgementalism and bigotry. Could 'Satan' have thought of a better strategy of destroying faith in Jesus?  In 20-50 years (1-3 generations) the levels of church attendance and Christian commitment will mirror those of much of Europe, around 5%.

I'm only going to make a couple of comments- and post a link to the Oracle article.  Here is the link to the Oracle story: http://media.www.usforacle.com/media/storage/paper880/news/2007/1 1/07/News/Student.RunIn.With.Evangelist.Anything.But.Holy-3083479 .shtml?reffeature=textemailedition

You HAVE to read this- it's crazy!

Just please remember that the behavior and words you read are NORMAL for these people- I've both heard a little of it myself, and I've heard many complaints from people who got "turned off" to Christianity because of their hate speech.
