Since Barack Obama has formally announced his exploratory committee for a run for president, those who are interested may wish to look back on some of the hoo ha following his speech last summer at the Call to Renewal conference in Washington, in which he sought to discuss the role of religion in public life and in the Democratic Party.

hoo ha. I suspect that Obama's responses are authentic. Someone needs to tell the man that by emphasizing religious expression, he leaves out a whole lot of our natural allies.

Obama parroted a central frame of the religious right; one at odds with his otherwise excellent defense of the right to individual belief and expression.  When a major liberal Democratic pol mouths fundamental ideas of the religious right, and is uble to justify his views, you know you've hit on a troubling aspect of worldview, intellect or character. I think it is the former, and I am not sure he has rethought his position. I will be listening.

Thanks for reposting this Fred. It's an overlooked topic.

I worry that the problem is not one of Obama's "worldview, intellect, or character," but one of a paradigm so thorough that even an otherwise liberal/lefty character can spout this nonsense as if it's common sense.

paradigm and worldview are pretty synonynous.

We have been discussing, around here, the matter of how Jim Wallis and others have been blaming unnamed "secularists" for all manner of social and political evils for some time.

There is a point at which, given a fair chance to hear concerns, that refusal to adjust in light of fair and friendly and factual criticism, does  become a matter of character and intellect. The jury is still out on Obama on this matter. I look forward to seeing if, in his book, he continues to advance the unsupported assertions that generated all the hoo ha.
