Christmas in June
After six Christmas-free months, the American Family Association has decided that they need to combat persecution by stores that acknowledge the existence of December holidays other than Christmas.
If nothing else, the AFA is business-savvy. As they point out in their latest Action Alert, June is when retailers start making plans for the busiest shopping season of the year. So they've decided to roll out a petition to "the nation's largest retailers", who are so far unspecified. Dear National Retailer, I wanted to let you know in June that any company which bans the term Christmas from their advertising and promotion will not be getting my business this coming Christmas season. I ask that you not ban "Christmas" in your advertising and promotions. I look forward with the hopes you will honor my request. They articulate their offense at being considered one of many groups to their members: "There are companies which don't want to offend a small handful of their customers by mentioning Christmas because Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ. However, they don't mind offending Christians by refusing to use the term Christmas." Here I was thinking that Christmas was, in fact, a holiday that is supposed to be happy, and that there were other holidays besides Christmas celebrated in December. After all, I'm a Pagan who celebrates the Winter Solstice. But how dare I suggest that I be treated as equal to Christian consumers, right? Perhaps those of us who celebrate other holidays ought to write to our favorite national retailers, and let them know that we count for more than the AFA would like for them to think, all year round.
