Faith Czar Goes Out Swinging -- Against AU
Towey just doesn't get it. In fact, he seems willfully blind to the facts. Bush proposed funneling millions of taxpayer dollars into the coffers of sectarian organizations with no controls to make sure the funds aren't spent to advance religion. He also crusaded to allow publicly funded church-based programs to hire and fire staff based on religion.
Furthermore, it isn't just secularists, radical or otherwise, who oppose the faith-based initiative. Plenty of religious people do as well. Shortly after Bush announced the faith-based scheme early in 2001, Americans United launched a petition drive among members of the clergy to show Americans the scope of religious opposition to the plan. In just three months, nearly 1,000 religious leaders signed the petition. They represented dozens of Christian denominations, as well as non-Christian faith groups. (An updated version of the petition is being circulated, as well as one aimed at social-service providers. See here for more information: www.stopreligiousdiscrimination.com.)
