Great op-ed in today's LA Times.

The connection between Christianity and political power is enough to make this believer hang her head. And yet to attack this Christianity as all of Christianity is, of course, an error. It ignores the fact that medieval Christianity was reformed -- by Martin Luther and the Church of England, among others. But most of all, it neglects a history that includes someone such as the German pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who organized the Confessing Church to resist Nazi exclusion laws, joined the plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler and paid for it with his life.

Bonhoeffer believed that the heart of what it meant to be a Christian was to act on behalf of the marginalized -- the helpless, the sick, the poor, the friendless. He distinguished between what he called "cheap grace," that form of lip service I think we can all identify with, and "costly grace," meaning the kind that gets you into trouble.

If I think of costly grace, I remember the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks; the abolitionists; the Christians of Jubilee 2000 who successfully pressured Britain and the United States to forgive the developing world's crippling debt; the Quakers who protect and advise pacifists; the women and men who work daily in soup kitchens, for living-wage ordinances, against torture at Guantanamo Bay. None of us have done enough, and that is partly why so many people only know about the Christianity that cozies up to power.

For every Christian who takes Jesus' teaching seriously and thus works for debt forgiveness, peace, helping the poor and opposing torture, there are 20 or so who are either indifferent to these issues or are actively supporting the other side.

How do you reconcile that with your faith?  Which Christians are right?  Why?  What should be done about the others?

This site is for discussing ways to stop attacks of the Religious Right dominionists and theocrats.  This response doesn't meet that standard.  I'm sure you can find many other sites that will allow you to indulge in religious vs whatever......apologetics

for being rude.  It was uncalled for.
Could you clarify your point please?

I agree with the original post that there are certainly many examples of Christians throughout history who have worked for justice, peace and equality.  At this point, however, with the decline of mainstream Protestant denominations and the rise of more "conservative" congregations, the pendulum seems to be  swinging the other direction.

I find the two different views of Christianity impossible to reconcile and there are obvious theological differences.  I certainly believe the "liberal" community is standing on firmer ground theologically, but rarely read or hear any church leaders holding forth on the subject.  The religious right certainly isn't bashful about attacking liberal Christians on theological grounds, should liberal Christians be bashful about doing so?

I apologize if my comment is inappropriate.

appears to be beginning.  There is a new book from Beacon Press (mentioned elsewhere on this site, but I am too computer-incompetent to post a link) called "Getting on Message:  Challenging the Christian Right from the Heart of the Gospel."  I haven't read it yet, though I plan to, but the title strongly suggests that it embraces the challenge you are calling for.  (One of the people involved with the book, the Rev. Rita Nakashima Brock, was guest pastor at my church a few weeks ago, and gave an inspiring sermon on this topic.)  And there are other signs as well.  More politicians are beginning to make explicit the connection between liberal values like honesty, compassion, and social justice and the values of their faith.  (See, e.g., the diary "Two Great Quotes!!" by Ninure on this site.)  And there are the web sites like CrossLeft and Dark Christianity.  Much is beginning to be done; it's just that we have about 20 years of catching up to do . . . .

have been resting on their laurels intellectually while doing the work we are called to do socially.

I've been doing public speaking about the Religious Right recently.  The reason I'm called on to speak is that many clergy simply don't know where the attacks are coming from.  They want to respond but they are late to the game and can't sort out the meaning, means, and direction of the enemy.

I mentioned in another blog that the learning curve for all of this is very steep.  I've been working at understanding it for about 3 years and I'm just getting up to what I consider to be acceptable speed.  Those who are at the bottom of the curve are extremely frustrated with the climb.

had best get hold of their names and discription lest, like confessing Christians, the right wing turn them to bitter dust.  Bonhoeffer, I'm sure, is spinning in his grave at the misuse of language heretofore attached to him and those he raised up to tell truth to power.
