Biblical Literacy Curriculum Jockeys for Adoption

The Bible and Its Influence, published in September 2005  by the Biblical Literacy Project (BLP) to give high school teachers a resource for teaching about the Bible that would not spawn lawsuits, has been adopted by only six school districts, according to the March 15, 2006 issue of Religion BookLine, an e-newsletter published by Publishers Weekly.
Districts in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, New Hampshire and Texas have adopted the $50-a-copy text, which was written in consultation with scholars, religious groups and lawyers. The BLP, based in Fairfax VA, reports that several dozen school districts have stated their intention to adopt the book for next year--but no orders have been placed yet.

Meanwhile, Religion BookLine reports: "The National Council on Bible Curriculum in Public Schools, which calls the Bible its textbook and supplements it with a 300-page teacher guide, got approvals from 24 new districts in January and from four more in February. That's up from an average of two new districts per month over the past 12 years, according to president Elizabeth Ridenour. 'It's really been snowballing,' said Ridenour."

The Council's website claims that 346 school districts in 37 states have adopted their curriculum. This announcement is accompanied by streaming audio of a trumpet flourish.

The Religion BookLine article observes that the BLP faces "an uphill challenge" to get its text adopted because school districts have avoided teaching potentially controversial Bible-related. (Only 8 percent of districts have such courses.) Additionally, "the BLP text has stirred controversy by touching also on thorny questions of authorship and non-literal interpretations."

To gain acceptance, the BLP has gathered endorsements from Christian conservatives such as prison activist Chuck Colson and National Association of Evangelicals president Ted Haggard. The BLP also recently released statements from six evangelical scholars, who described the curriculum as "compelling," "accurate" and "breathtaking."

The BLP seems undeterred by the text's slow adoption rate. Religion BookLine reported that Sheila Weber, BLP spokeswoman, told them "It takes a long time to get the word out to teachers and students and to shift their curriculum. This is not just a matter of plugging a new algebra book into an algebra course."

to the idea of using the Bible as a literary text.  It is an important primary source for the history of western ideas and deserves to be treated as such.

That said, only a miniscule number of teachers has the necessary scholership in literary and historical (higher) criticism to teach the Bible objectively. The number of state and local school board members intellectually equipped to judge the objectivity of a text book for such a course is even smaller. Most journalists writing or speaking about the topic of biblical textbooks are probably as equipped to ask rational questions about the objectivity of the text as school board members are to judge it.

If I were a school board member, I wouldn't touch this one.  It's going to end up in the courts, not because its a bad idea, but because the people on the delivery end just aren't knowledgeable enough to do the job well or to avoid getting hurt. If I were required to teach such a class, I'd have my lawyer check the school's liablity policy, and if I weren't completely covered for all possible legal problems that might arise,   I would politely refuse to teach it in front of my lawyer and a union representative.

As I ewad this blog, i couldn't help but glance at my bookcase,  where I have over a dozen tranlastions of the Bible.

Some of these translations have subtle theological "slants", some contain "books" which the others do not.

Whose "denominational favorite" would be used?

The very fact that ANYONE would claim that the Bible is a "textbook" is frightening, and cannot be trusted to present the Bible as anything other than something which backs a particular  religious "agenda".

And that is something  "we"  must  not  allow in the public schools.

Indeed.

Whose "denominational favorite" would be used?" - Yes, Christianity has since its inception been wracked by interpretational issues.

So, who presumes the mantle of God in interpreting the Bible ?

I surely think it's possible to develop a scholarly, dispassionate, non-religious curriculum for studying the bible.  If one put forth such a curriculum, the "Bible Literacy Project" (perhaps better named the "Bible Literally Project") and the NCBCPS would be up in arms and picketing the schools.
