Major Victory For Evolution in Ohio

Just in: the Ohio Board of Education just voted 11-4 to strip pro-intelligent design language from the state's science standards.
What is most noteworthy is that just a month ago the same board denied the same motion 9-8. What happened in the interim? Two things:

1) Ohio Republican Gov. Taft came out opposed to intelligent design.

2) 6,000 members of the Campaign to Defend the Constitution sent a whopping 30,000 emails to the board's pro-intelligent design members.

Congrats to all. This is a huge victory for Ohio and for science. Two wins in three months (Dover, Pa in December), the tide is turning.

It is good to see that the tide of common sense is beginning to rise again- especially in Ohio. Of course, that will bring the fanatics out of the woodwork, because they will interpret it as the devil's doing.

I think I've heard about it too...

Lorie - have you any good resources on this new development?  I've only found one mention of it, and now I can't find the article again to reference it here...

My understanding of "Critical Analysis":

The ID folks have figured out that they're not going to be able to propose any "theories" that talk about a "designer" of any sort, since people will automatically understand that to mean "god" (now that the courts have spoken)...

However, they still think they have leverage with the concept that evolution has gaps in its theory - and so they are continuing to try and discredit evolution with a "critical analysis" of its "flaws"...

That way, if people start questioning the validity of evolution as a scientific study, they can at least get rid of it as a subject for schools... that way there is absolutely no competition when the student's religious instruction speaks to creation...

Their ultimate goal is to totally discredit evolution and remove it from school curricula - but in the meantime, they are happy to have students "studying the controversy" - as they have been using this phrase in the past... just this time, instead of ID as an alternative, the controversy is just forcing teachers to talk about the flaws in, or the "controversy" over the validity of, evolution.

While the Ohio lesson plan does not mention intelligent design, which posits that life is too complex to be explained by evolution alone, critics contend that the critical analysis language is simply [intelligent] design in disguise. [emphasis mine]

"This lesson is bad news, the 'critically analyze' wording is bad news," Martha W. Wise, the board member who offered the emergency motion, told her colleagues during 90 minutes of contentious debate here Tuesday afternoon. "It is deeply unfair to the children of this state to mislead them about the nature of science."

How Many Times Can You Say Evolution and Mean Zip? (none / 0)
Or, another tactic is to use the word evolution (and, leave out the traditional others such as Creationism or ID) enough times that folks might think you know what you are talking about. See this Burnett County Sentinel Article to read what I mean (I counted evolution written 13 times). This is the school board (Grantsburg, WI) that provided the spark that got the Clergy Letter Project going. I wouldn't give any of these folks an inch.
