SD Abortion Ban Coverage in the Boston Globe

The Boston Globe has a an article on the campaign. The article cites a poll that suggests that initiative to overturn the draconian ban is will pass. However, Talk To Action's CynCooper is concerned that the poll may be painting a rosy and even deceptive picture, given the enormous amount of covert cash flowing into the state, and the mobilizaiton of the religious right and the Catholic Church.
The Globe Reports:  
A poll released Thursday by KELO-TV in Sioux Falls indicated that 50 percent of likely voters oppose the ban and 41 percent support it, with the rest undecided. "It appears to me as though South Dakotans are pretty much where the rest of the country is: We don't like abortion, but we don't think it should be banned completely," said Don Dahlin , a political science professor at the University of South Dakota...

The antiabortion campaign has tried to ease voter concerns about the ban's broad reach by assuring them that all women could still use the morning-after pill . Under South Dakota law, however, pharmacists are not required to dispense the pill and emergency rooms are not required to offer it to victims of sexual assault.

Yes, I think from being there, the polls can be misleading.  It is so close, and the real question is who will go to the polls. That the majority of people don't want something has rarely stopped it from happening.  As you know, it's who votes on it.

The anti-abortion campaign is rife with lies, as well as swarmy tactics.  Pro-choice people are being intimidated by bullying tactics of the right wing anti-abortion people -- although they are of a "quieter" type ... neighbors who won't talk to you, kids who are pressured in school, nasty emails, hassled on the street by anti-abortion people with their signs, lectured in church.  

And the religious right has completely mobilized to get out voters to support their view, even though their view is highly distorted.

Whatever happens, seeing this campaign up close presents a total insight into the dangers of religious right involvement in politics.

For the record, a NO vote on Referred Law 6 is to vote against the ban on abortion and will STOP it.  (A YES vote on 6 installs the ban into law.)

this is important for all of the reasons you lay out so well. The truly fanatical behavior of the anti-abortion activists is something to take note of. These kinds of things are not limited to SD, and are likely to spread to many othere places over time.

SD is fair warning of what can happen elsewhere.
