Around the ID Wall: Ohio Public High School Offers Independent Christian Studies
A group of parents seeking a “classical Christian education” led by parent Kelly Kullberg began the program called Veritas, or truth, in Latin. Kullberg also happens to be the founder of the Veritas Forum, a Christian organization that leads students in religious discussions at secular colleges and universities brought the program into the school curriculum. Speaking of today’s youth, Kullberg said, "They’re hungry for hope and if that includes questions of faith and God, then my view is that is perfectly legit in a classroom, because education should be about the search for truth." “The classes are not affiliated with Veritas Academy or the Veritas Forum,” Kullberg said. Rick Dickinson, general counsel for the Ohio School Boards Association is concerned. He sees nothing in the law which would exempt independent-study classes from state requirements prohibiting school districts and other public entities from endorsing religion. "The issues of separation of church and state and violations of the First Amendment would be the same if it’s offered for credit by the public high school," he said. "If what’s going on is not unconstitutional, it’s skating very close to the line," said Gary Daniels, litigation coordinator for the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio. "The real problem here is that kids receive credit for this." As with ID, the objection to this subterfuge is not a critique on the study of history or English through a biblical lens. It’s done in churches and Sunday schools all over the country To read the full article, go to: http://www.dispatch.com/news-story.php?story=dispatch/2006/11/17/ 20061117-A1-02.html
