Whoa! With a MAJOR HAT-TIP TO MYDD for this news, check this out, from the Sioux City-based daily newspaper:

A day after the Democratic sweep of the midterm elections, Woodbury County Republican Chairman Steve Salem had harsh words for his own party, lambasting the influence of the conservative Christian right wing.

Salem said he coined a new phase: "You've heard of IslamaFascists -- I think we now have Christian fascists. What is the definition of a fascist? Not only do they want to beat you, but they want to destroy you in the process."
Obviously, that's not the academic definition of a fascist, but (just as obviously) that's beside the point!

I went to college at a Dutch Reformed school near Sioux City. This is SERIOUSLY "red" territory--the northwestern corner of Iowa, abutting South Dakota. (TTA isn't a partisan site, and this isn't a partisan question, but isn't is interesting how in the US "red" has gone from meaning Communist to Republican?)

I think this is an interesting development. One might argue that the speaker's "just" a county chair, but he's county chair in a pretty red area, and an area where there are many, many churches affiliated with Calvinist traditions of mixing religious and civic law and activities.

Whether the guy is only a county chairman, he has a grip on things. The relgious Right has coined the 'Islamofascist' term for its own self-righteous venom, and as the pre-election was going worse & worse for W, he himself tried it for any advantage he could muster. While Rightists, political & pseudoreligious, are quick to point the finger, they will be the last to see themselves as the culprit of equal or worse dimensions. Anyone who has read some of my posts responding to the invading Trolls at www.christianalliance.org will know that I indict them similarly as christofascists/christocrats, et al. It's only fair and very accurate!
