What do teacher Sidney McGee and Congressman Mark Foley have in common?
The New York Times reported on Saturday that a popular art teacher, Sidney McGee, who had 28 years classroom experience, lost her job because she took her fifth grade classes to the Dallas Museum of Art. There were some nude statues in the museum. This bit of news would be funny if it weren't so tragic - and not just for the teacher. How many children are being raised to believe that the human body is an instrument of sin? How many children are taught abstinence only sex education and that gay sex should be criminalized? What happens to children raised to believe that natural sexual feelings are sinful? What do they do with those raging hormones? The same week that Ms. McGee lost her job over nude statues, Congressman Mark Foley, a six-term Republican, resigned for reportedly sending sexually explicit internet messages to underage Congressional pages. Foley, it turns out, was a champion on laws against sexual predators. While I am glad to see Mark Foley leave Congress, I wonder at the culture that produced such a man.
