Reclaiming Citizenship, History and Faith

What in earth dies that mean?
I seem to contintually be getting in trouble with people who are supposedly my "allies"..almost as much as the folks who are, without question, my foes.

And part of it is due to, I think,  me being confused as to what they  really mean  when they make statements like "Reclaiming  Citizenship, History and  Faith".

How can something be even claimed, let alone  "reclaimed", if it can't be talked about?

For example: The Religious Right  is quite successfully using the tactic of calling anyone who disagrees with them anti-Christian, goddless, and/or God-haters.

Those tarred with that Brush include other Christians, atheists, agnostics.  Jews. Muslims, adherents to Eastern Religions....well just about 80% of the USA.

I fell safe in saying at least 80% because eveb the vast majority of Americab Christians have no idea how what the "Bible says"  or does not "say" about any particular issue.

Those who do go to "church" only know what their Pastor(s) tell them.  (You ,ight want to look for the Barba Group for some intrseting studies on this topic)

And when their Pastors knowingly, or unknowingly, "feed" their congregants the posioned theology of the religious right..should "we" be prepared with the antidote or not?

Am I really nuts for thinking that one of the reasons that Dr. Martin Luther King was so successful,  why the civil-rights movement  was so sucessful was becaise "religious actucIsts" did indeed go toe-to-toe with the "conservative"  AND the so-called "moderate" christians in their own ground?

Am I really nuts for declaring that I refuse to allow the Religious Right to deny my faith )or the faith of others)  and claim that I (or others) have no right to call myself a Christian?

Am I nuts for declaring that I will not stand for the Religious Right calling my non-Christian friends, "God-haters"..and that is a lie I am more than willing to throw back in their faces?

Just what does "reclaiming faith" mean?

Display:
Seems to me to be an obvious question, if not the obvious question. You've raised it and in response there's nothing but silence. Reading the site guidelines and "about" page really get you nowhere in shedding some light on a statement that appears on the top of every single page of this site.

I'll take a shot at explaining why that is so.  It's because that's a slogan, a bit of marketing. It doesn't necessarily mean anything, and if you ask me, it suggests a near-impossiblity: that under the present and historical conditions, "faith" is something that can be "reclaimed." Raising the question of what that means, simply brings one closer to this uncomfortable, inconvenient fact.

It seems to me that, when religion and faith have become the source of problems, the addition of more religion and more faith would be rather ineffective as a solution. When faith and religion become mere justifications of the position that life is not worth living outside of a system that neatly provides the neck of some poor unfortunate soul under one's boot, and that the placement of that neck under the boot is an expression of a cosmic order, faith and religion provide only minor quibbles over whose concept of cosmic order, divine sanction, and divine retribution should apply, rather than addressing the fundamental human injustice of the boot on that neck.

Meanwhile it seems that one of the primary activities here on this site (a valuable activity, to some degree, but not to the exclusion of other tasks) is some kind of cosmic sorting mechanism, into who or what group qualifies as "dominionist" or "religious right" or "theocrat" or somesuch and what some dead or nearly-dead leader of that flavor once said. While the source of the changes push by those easily identified by those names is something that is much harder to put one's finger on, but must be dealt with; that what's actually being changed is the means by which people conceptualize basic assumptions about how the world works and what should be valued. Some call that a "worldview" for short, but I think it's important, since we're supposedly trying to figure out what's happening and what to do about it, that the particulars of what that means be spelled out.

The meanings of the words "freedom" and "liberty," as just one example, are being changed out from under us. Beyond that, the ability to cognize what those things are is simply being undermined, to the point that people can no longer want what they can no longer think about. Freedom is not just another word for consumer choice!

Order is redefined at both the individual and global level, not as the product of a natural process in which all participate, but as something imposed in a hierarchy by a "godly" oligarchy, often through the indirection of an alleged divine sanction or divine direct intervention. Thus we see both the attempted elimination of the teaching of evolution in schools and the imposition of a totalitarian state to micromanage and monitor every aspect of an individuals' life.

I don't see much of a role here for "faith." I also see little need for marketing that is completely disconnected from any course of action in the physical world, because the great weak point, as much as there is one, in this whole process is the rapidly growing divergence between the way people think about the world and the physical world itself. This is why the outright lie has become the hallmark of both our politics and our journalism, that there are few, if any, physical consequences for those who talk and act against their own interests and even their own existence. People are not losing their jobs or their power to any significant degree as a result of these lies. The dead are pushed to the margins or overseas where they can't interfere with this collective denial of the physical limitations on this worldview.

It becomes difficult to even suggest what kind of action can be taken in such an environment, but I will say this: the use of language, slogans and marketing that imply an action without at least some skeletal explanation of what form that action takes, and how that action will eventually be effective in the physical world, is really a display of inpotence. Such is this suggestion that "faith" can be "reclaimed."

But, I need to address Ninure's accusation. As one of the two original founding members of the site ( along with Frederick Clarkson ) I'd have to say - first of all - that Ninure's post wasn't related to the focus of this site - the Christian right movement and how to oppose it. It was a promotion for a course on spirituality which was fine in itself. But, the site can't function simply as a bulletin board. There are many interest groups represented here, and most have dedicated websites for discussion. Talk To Action is a narrowly focused site - the spotlight is on the Christian right movement and on how to respond.

On a personal note, I've had comments and posts deleted - and I have a strong dislike for the Orwellian ability of website administrators to do so with a keystroke. So, I've taken to mailing deleted comments and posts back to their authors - which is what I did in this case. Further, I let Ninure know that - although her post was not appropriate here at Talk To Action - it would be quite appropriate and very well received at "Street Prophets" [  http://www.streetprophets.com ]. Street Prophets is another community website - focused on progressive religion - of approximately the same size as Talk To Action.

This website is really - on the part of Frederick Clarkson, myself, and the writers who donate their time and energy - both the front page writers and all who post diaries and participate - a philanthropic activity. Creating this site has consumed both money and substantial time, and my personal financial responsibilities kept me from responding to this post sooner.

As for the core question, well.....

In short :

1) "Reclaiming citizenship" - Over the last two decades, while the Christian right learned about political organizing and built electoral strength, the participation of the left in politics atrophied. "Citizenship" is not a passive state, it demands personal involvement.

"Reclaiming citizenship" really amounts to "getting personally involved in politics" but the latter expression is fairly clunky.

  1. "Reclaiming Faith" - Well, the Christian right has claimed the high ground and branded - in the American public mind - the GOP as the political party of "faith" and "values" . Can the left recapture this territory it has ceded ?

  2. "Reclaiming History" - The Christian right claims the United States was founded as a "Christian Nation" : the opinion of this site is that such claims distort the historical record. "Reclaiming history" involves setting the record straight on the origins of the United States, the intentions of its founders.

Our statement of purpose is quite clear. We have a clear site focus on the religious right and what to do about it, and a few clear editorial positions.

There will always be those who seek to twist clear meanings to their own purposes, or raise a question as if the question has not already been answered many times over.

It doesn't trouble me.

Talk to Action will go forward in our own way and at our own pace.

As we said in the site guidelines. Those who agree with our purpose are welcome to participate.
