Wagner & Rushdoony

In his 2008 book Dominion! - How Kingdom Action Can Change The World, C. Peter Wagner advocated burning books and artwork in the manner of Girolamo Savonarola and traced his movement's dominion theology through R.J. Rushdoony, acknowledged founder of Christian Reconstructionism. Wrote Wagner, on page 59 of the book,

"The practical theology that best builds a foundation for social transformation is dominion theology, sometimes called "Kingdom now." Its history can be traced back through R.J. Rushdoony and Abraham Kuyper to John Calvin." (Dominion!, Chosen Books, 2008)"
Rushdoony wanted to institute stoning, or other capital punishments mentioned in the Bible such as burning at the stake, for a range of misdeeds including female premarital sex, homosexuality, idolatry, blasphemy, and witchcraft. Rushdoony also espoused a radical form of theocratic libertarianism "which would dramatically reduce the federal government and control society through enforcement of biblical law at the local and state levels" according to researcher Rachel Tabachnick.

Rushdoony's vision, which would dismantle most federal social services and regulatory functions, and curtail federal support for labor rights, appears manifested in New Apostolic Reformation attacks on labor unions and national health care reform

While he has recently sought to downplay the political ambitions of his movement, at a 2008 New Apostolic Reformation conference Wagner declared,

"Dominion has to do with control. Dominion has to do with rulership. Dominion has to do with authority and subduing and it relates to society. In other words, what the values are in Heaven need to be made manifest here on earth. Dominion means being the head and not the tail. Dominion means ruling as kings. It says in Revelation Chapter 1:6 that He has made us kings and priests - and check the rest of that verse; it says for dominion. So we are kings for dominion."

Thanks so much for the expanse of accurate and honest reporting and commentary this site provides. This is my first comment. As a walkaway from the Southern Baptists after an attempted Calvinist steeplejacking of my church, I have studied and read all I can to try to understand this movement. The fundamentalist takeover of the SBC 30+ years ago was huge. The ease with which it was accomplished made it the carrot on the stick that drives the zeal of the theocratic dominionist / christian nationalist movement. Now it is vitally important to note the fact that most of the SBC seminaries are cranking out young calvinist pastors to literally school unsuspecting rural congregations into alliance with this NAR goal.

I'm not aware that burning at the stake is mandated anywhere in the Bible. The usual method of execution called for in scripture is stoning. God is depicted as raining down fire on various miscreants, but that seems to be the privilege of deity, not humanity.

At some point the Roman Catholic church became quite fond of burning heretics at the stake. Jan Hus and Jeanne d'Arc were two notable victims. The Protestant Council in Geneva (with Calvin's approval and probably at his instigation) burned the brilliant physician, cartographer, and reformer Michael Servetus because he dared to advance a non-trinitarian theology of deity. So Rushdoony had plenty of historical inspiration for execution for burning, but not much from scripture.

"If a man take a wife and her mother, it is wickedness: they shall be burnt with fire, both he and they; that there be no wickedness among you." -- Leviticus 20:14

"And the daughter of any priest, if she profane herself by playing the whore, she profaneth her father: she shall be burnt with fire." -- Leviticus 21:9

"Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt." -- Genesis 38:24

"He that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath. ... And Joshua ... took Achan ... and his sons, and his daughters ... And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire." -- Joshua 7:15, 24-25

My mistake. It's amazing what doesn't register in the brain, even after several readings. I think what threw me off was not being able to recall the specific image of burning "at the stake."

In her social fiction book "The Handmaid's Tale" by Canadian Margaret Atwood we were shown mostly hangings with many bodies hood covered as grisly displays for the rest to learn from. Nice and easy and not too costly. But I could see in some future time the leadership of Gilead using burnings for certain types of "criminals" on flat screen tv where people make a holiday of it. Like in earlier times of our country and in Europe. A surreal tableaux I would not like to see happen for real. But I see many in that movement of many heads that have that old world zeal and gusto for torture and murder. If they do get the chance and get their way this country in whatever permutation and transmutation will be far more dangerous than a few angry Muslims. The USA has a huge arsenal and is spreading globally. They finally have penetrated the African continent. Very dangerous.
