The Pope at it again

I'm not really sure what Pope Benedict XVI is hoping to prove and/or gain by reinstating the Tridentine Mass but I'm sure that it won't be good for the long term health of the Roman Catholic Church.
Maybe I'm the only one but it seems to me that all of the progress made and bridges built by Pope John Paul II and slowly, one by one being chipped away by Pope Benedict XVI.

Display:
The real progress in the Catholic Church was accomplished mostly by John XXIII (1958-1963) and to a lesser extent, by Paul VI. They were the faces of Vatican II, the long overdue series of changes within the Church.

Pope John Paul II who did some fine things could also be strident at times. In fact, he was the Pontiff who greatly empowered lay groups such as Opus Dei.

I will touch upon the theme you raised in this Saturday's post on the Catholic Right.

Yesterday, the Washington Post and other news outlets ran an AP story detailing the Pope's further roll-back of Vatican II in stating that Protestant churches are ' "not true churches but merely ecclesial communities and therefore did not have the "means of salvation." ' http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/07/10/A R2007071000460.html?tid=informbox Kind of odd, coming from the head of the worlds largest criminal organization (which has organized a cover-up and subversion of the judicial process since at least 1955 for the amount of sexual abuse the priesthood has been visiting on those entrusted to its care). He doesn't have much moral standing to make such pronouncements in my opinion.

Sharon, while I share your disgust with the way much of the hierachy has handled the pedophilia scandal, please do not  demonize the entire Catholic Church as "the worlds (sic) largest criminal organization." That is just outright unfair to those in the hierachy as well as many regular Catholics who are seeking to uncover and purge the Church of this vile crime.

Leave stridency to our opponents.

How the hierarchy "handled the pedophilia scandal." 1) shuttled offenders from parish to parish for years, 2) paid off and/ or intimidated victims to quiet them, 3) suppressed reporting to authorities (it was Ratzinger that formally reinforcing this 1962 order, by the way) on pain of excommunication. 4) shifted blame to an innocent group (gay priests) despite obvious differences between homosexuality and pedophilia, and blamed the reporting on anti-Catholicism to discredit the whistle blowers. A conspiracy to obstruct justice, keep the crimes secret, and keep the offenders from receiving civil punishment. Organized by the top levels of the church from parish to bishops to inside the Vatican (namely, a person who is now the Pope). The word "systemic" comes to mind. If the Boston Globe (and others) hadn't started reporting on this in 2002, would there be any fundamental change in the way the church "handled the scandal?" I am aware the Catholic Church does a great many good things, for a great many people world-wide. Question is, how much bad leaven does it take to label the entire dough a criminal loaf? And the pedophilia scandal, is just a part of the bad leaven I could go into. If this were any other organization where would people draw the line? They don't get a "pass" from me because they are a religious entity. If anything, I hold them to a higher standard. I'll grant that there are reformers in the hierarchy and laity, but when the head of the church is involved... ((http://www.dissidentvoice.org/Apr05/Whitney0426.htm) or Google his role in the obstruction.) This being said, we can just agree to disagree on this, as it is off topic to the original post.
