Need clarification on Joshua Generation

I wonder if anyone out there can answer this question:

There are a bunch of different groups, as far as I can tell, that take the name of "Joshua Generation" or "Generation Joshua". There's the group headed by Ned Ryun: do all the others ascribe to his idelogy? Are they formally linked? How can one tell the differences, if any?

I'm just newly looking into this stuff -- inspired by my interviews with Fred Clarkson, Esther Kaplan and Michelle Goldberg for my radio show, Writer's Voice. If anyone has some good ideas on where to find out more about the real agenda of GenJosh (they don't really spell it out on the websites), especially from primary sources, please comment and let me know!

Thanks!

Saturday is a slow day for the site, but I'm sure you'll get some replies soon enough.

As a general thought though, I would not at all be surprised if "the Joshua Generation" was both a concept ( and part of a larger, loose ideology ) and also associated with more than one group or organization.

... at least according to Hanna Rosin's article, "God and Country: A college that trains young Christians to be politicians" in the New Yorker issue of 2005-06-27:

Farris's manifesto for the school [Patrick Henry College, of which he is president], "The Joshua Generation," embraces the Rove principle: the "Moses generation," he wrote, had "left Egypt," and now it was time for their children to "take the land."

According to http://www.mercedsun-star.com/local/v-print/story/11313196p-12062 408c.html>http://www.mercedsun-star.com/local/v-print/story/11313196p-12062 408c.html, the town of Merced, California, hosts a chapter of "Generation Joshua, a national Christian organization of homeschooled youths who seek to influence politics."

Since Farris is a key player in the hyperchristian home schooling movement, quite likely there's some overlap here. Hmm... searching for "Joshau" at the Patrick Henry site yields, among other hits, this:

"June 2004    Vol 2, Issue 4

High School Leaders Making a Difference

The Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), housed on the PHC campus, recently launched a new program called Generation Joshua. A dynamic civics education program that encourages high school-age-students to actively engage in voter registration drives and political campaigns, Generation Joshua is helping tomorrow's leaders elect leaders for today.

The new program is sponsoring a Teen Leadership Camp at Patrick Henry College the week of July 25-31. The Generation Joshua Teen Camp will be led by Ned Ryun, director of Generation Joshua, and will include trips to Washington, DC, campaign training, and dynamic speakers such as author and political activist David Barton, Congressman Jim Ryun, Dr. Jeff Myers and other nationally known conservative leaders.

For more information about Generation Joshua, membership applications, voter registration drives, Teen Leadership Camp, and Student Action Teams, visit: http://www.generationjoshua.org"

And at that last URL is plenty of colorful evidence that the project continues - but if you want the inside scoop, you're going to have to sign up for their summer camp, book club, etc...

There's an older article about Generation Joshua - "Reading, Writing & Right Wing Politics":  http://www.boston.com/news/globe/ideas/articles/2004/08/15/readin gwriting_right_wing_politics/

"God's Next Army" is a documentary that airs occasionally on TV's Discovery Times channel.  It's a profile of Patrick Henry College and student involvement by Generation Joshua in 2005's Virginia gubernatorial election.

I also found hard copy of an article from HSLDA.org from March 2004 that is no longer available at the website.  It appears to be from HSLDA's Court Report publication, Volume 20, No.1:

"He [Mike Farris] described the next generation of homeschoolers, our children, as the `Joshua Generation' - those who must claim the land (a symbol of freedom).  Their task demands that they be leaders...HSLDA's goal is to be more active in the determination of who ends up leading our nation in the political realm."

I'll keep looking.
