Creationism in the UK

They say that when America sneezes, the world catches a cold. That is no longer true only of economic recessions, but of intellectual recessions too.
Creationism is making inroads into biology lessons in the UK. As usual, it is being portrayed as an innocent historical reflection on an old-fashioned view, at least for now. Here is the story:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/4793198.stm

There should be much scope for those who are opposed to theocracy in the United States and those who are opposed to faith-based science teaching in the UK to make common cause.

For all the disavowals about teaching creationism:

The National Curriculum Online website says for science at Key Stage 4 (GCSE level): "Students should be taught how scientific controversies can arise from different ways of interpreting empirical evidence (for example Darwin's theory of evolution)."

Creationism doesn't interpret empirical evidence in a different way. It dismisses/denies empirical evidence. Afraid that while GB is less religious than US, its educators are no less ignorant about scientific theory.

The content of the article seems to imply that this "controversy" over evolution may be being presented in its historic context -- i.e. before and after Darwin's publication of "The Origin of Species", (maybe up to and including the Scopes trial?).

If that is the case, then it does reflect a real scientific controversy that Darwin helped precipitate and I suspect the OCR selected it since it is one of the more famous controversies of the past 300 years.

As long as they don't start getting into today's debate over ID (which is a political controversy not a scientific one) then I'd be willing to live with it.

I'd like to hear other perspectives on this development - what's the background ? Who's alleged to have pushed for the new curriculum ? The BBC story does not identify any specific individuals although they certainly exist.

It's a rather fuzzy story. More details would be useful.

The OCR made a brief statement about the news:

You may have seen coverage about our new Gateway Science specification in the media today.

At OCR, we believe candidates need to understand the social and historical context to scientific ideas both pre and post Darwin.

In our Gateway Science specification, candidates are asked to discuss why the opponents of Darwinism thought the way they did and how scientific controversies can arise from different ways of interpreting empirical evidence.

Creationism and 'intelligent design' are not regarded by OCR as scientific theories. They are beliefs that do not lie within scientific understanding.

So, there's no teaching of creationism and/or Intelligent Design in biology class.  It's simply a look back at the controversy caused by Darwin's work.

Yes, the OCR statement is plain enough. But I still have suspicions that this is the thin end of the wedge. History of science is interesting and a perfectly valid discipline in its own right, but you do not actually need it in order to learn current scientific theories.

It is also useful if schools teach scientific method, but there must be better examples than evolution v non-evolution, a controversy that remains a political minefield because politics does not focus exclusively on scientific evidence. For example, one could cover the very well-documented but politically uncontroversial (I think!) establishment of the double-helix structure of DNA.

I agree that it would be good to identify the individuals responsible for the OCR's decision, and for them to state their personal scientific and religious positions. It would also be good to have all of the internal memos leading up to that decision published. I must find out whether the OCR is subject to the Freedom of Information Act.

I have checked, the OCR is subject to the UK Freedom of Information Act, although unfortunately that Act has many exemptions.

I am checking whether secularist organisations are already putting in a request for documents that would show us how the decision was made. If they are not, I will put in a request myself and report back here.

Richard, I would be absolutely amazed if there was any creationist involvement in this decision.  I cannot believe that even if there was a single board member sympathetic to ID or creationism they would have enough sway to win over the his/her colleagues and get sympathetic material into the curriculum.

It's probably just that we're so used to the political games creationist play in the USA we forget that in some parts of the world, such attempts at perverting science in this way are almost unheard of.  This is a major examination board were talking about.  If they really were trying something on here, it would be a huge hit to their credibility.  I suspect the whole issue has been blown up way out of proportion.
