Haggard Fired by Church

The board of New Life Church, has fired Ted Haggerd as senior pastor.

The blog Colorado Confidential has posted the letter, which reads in part:

We, the Overseer Board of New Life Church, have concluded our deliberations concerning the moral failings of Pastor Ted Haggard.  Our investigation and Pastor Haggard's public statements have proven without a doubt that he has committed sexually immoral conduct.

The language of our church bylaws state that as Overseers we must decide in cases where the Senior Pastor has "demonstrated immoral conduct" whether we must "remove the pastor from his position or to discipline him in any way they deem necessary."

In consultation with leading evangelicals and experts familiar with the type of behavior Pastor Haggard has demonstrated, we have decided that the most positive and productive direction for our church is his dismissal and removal.

The national media has just begun to cover the story, and it seems likely that the reverberations will be felt for a long time.

The moral center of the story is a gay prostitute named Mike Jones who has said that the hypocrisy of Haggard's strident antigay activities made him angry. Jones says he came forward on his own, consulted no one and is unconnected to any political groups.

Here is what he told an interviewer on MSNBC:

COSBY: If Reverend Haggard is watching right now, what do you want to say to him?

JONES: You know, I want to tell him that I'm really sorry that he's in the position that he's in. You know, what this proves is we're all human. We all are sinners, but when you are in a position of authority and a role model for millions of people, you really need to practice what you preach.

I must say that I am very impressed with how quickly this church conducted an investigation and made a decision. The other impressive thing is how Haggard has responded. While there was some initial waffling, when the decision was made Haggard said that people should not attack the person who disclosed his "immoral behavior", but instead he should be thanked for making him face himself.

"Please forgive my accuser. He is revealing the deception and sensuality that was in my life. Those sins, and others, need to be dealt with harshly. So, forgive him and actually, thank God for him. I am trusting that his actions will make me, my wife and family, and ultimately all of you, stronger," Haggard wrote. "He didn't violate you; I did."

Having been following the Catholic Church's response to disclosures of abuse demonstrates the polar opposite of the handling of this matter. They have done everything they can to obstruct justice and have spent millions of dollars in lawyers’ fees to fight victims, even when the evidence is almost irrefutable. Rather than praise the victims for coming forward, this institution has chosen to treat the victims like enemies.

When the person who reported Haggard was questioned by reporters he expressed sadness for Haggard's family and for the man himself.

Victims of abuse by Catholic priests also usually report for one reason and that is to make sure that the abuser does not continue to be of risk to others. It would seem that the National Evangelical Association has ensured that won't happen.

When you contrast that with the Catholic Church's response, you begin to understand why victims are taking their complaints in droves to the criminal and civil justice systems. Over and over again the Catholic Church has proven they can't be trust. No wonder in these matters media never has to look far to find a disgruntled and mistreated victim of a Catholic Priest to get a quote from.

The Catholic Church could do to take note of how things should be done! Another bonus to this situation would be if Haggard began to realize what researchers and the GBLT community has been saying for years that being Gay is not a choice. It is who you are and how God made you. What God has made can not be a sin.

"The Catholic Church could do to take note of how things should be done! "

Amen. They have tarnished any credibility they might have had left.

"Another bonus to this situation would be if Haggard began to realize what researchers and the GBLT community has been saying for years that being Gay is not a choice. It is who you are and how God made you. What God has made can not be a sin."

Why would God make a person gay in contrast to His Word? That would make Him a liar. But God cannot lie because He is Holy. Sexual behavior is a choice. It's something you learn.
